Dave Paton has been designing web sites since 1996. Along the way he
has developed some web sites rich in database interaction and
e-commerce abilities. His start on the Internet came at the Virginian-Pilot
newspaper of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, where he filled in as producer of
the Internet edition, then took over the job full time in 1997. During
his two years as the main PilotOnline.com news producer, it rapidly grew
into one of the top 25 U.S. online newspapers.
In late 1998 a job as Falcon Publishing's online producer brought Dave
to Helena. He started out developing Internet content and licensing deals
with The Weather Channel, National Geographic.com, REI and others, and
wound up running Falcon's entire Internet operation, from server administration
to database and Web site development. After the Globe Pequot Press acquired
Falcon in late 2000, Dave oversaw the unification of the Globe, Falcon
and Lyons Press e-commerce catalog sites. He developed an intranet that
included targeted list e-mails for Globe sales and publicity, and many
other Web-based modules for accessing and utilizing database information.
As someone who was there during both the Net's pie-in-the-sky years of
the late 90s and the reality check of the last couple of years, Dave
has developed a good radar for what will work at a site, what is needed
online and what isn't. Dave graduated from the University of Michigan
and Northwestern University.
